Welcome to overexposed.com.au.
We aim to cover events. Be it fashion, movie premiere, music festivals, concerts or floriade, we’ll try to cover them.
However (there’s always a catch), we aim to cover events with a photographic/artistic angle. Sure we will have the shots that you are accustomed to in fashion magazines, standard people/celebrity shots but we also aim to throw in a few (wherever and as many as possible) photo-artistic shots.

Take for example, the main image on the home page (and the site). The shot is in itself simple. Nothing too artistic or extraordinary about the back of a model. Sure the composition is “arty” (if there’s such a thing..... who actually defines what is artistic and what is not..... sound like an idea for a future article..... ), the lighting is interesting, and the blurred “overexposed” (pardon the pun) model in the background adds to this. However, it’s nothing that stands out from the large gamut of similar marketing/product photos that grace our magazines.
But, for me, what is special about this particular photo (and a whole range of similar ones shot at the same time), is the fact that this photo was not a staged shot. The ability to direct and pose the model.....um, no. Selecting specific background for the photo shoot..... no to that one either. Controlled lighting..... not a chance. The photo was shot at the Myer Spring 2005 fashion parade and the shooting condition was outside of our photographer’s control.
Sure, it is a fashion parade and the clothes and models will definitely be top class, but from a photographer's point of view, the ability to shoot in an uncontrolled environment is often difficult and I suppose, to shoot in an uncontrolled environment and be able to compose and develop the final image into something quite different to the actual environment is why I class that image as artistic. Maybe it is not the standard definition of artistic, but since we are covering events and functions where we have minimal subject artistic control, our definition of artistic is the ability to control and convert what we don’t have control over. I like to class this as a “candid-artistic” photo style (remember where you read this first). More about this topic in future articles.

Here at overexposed.com.au, our, (and my personal) interest is in photography. Sure we enjoy a good concert or fashion show, but at the end of the day we are photography geeks – “check out the bokeh on that image”, “what lighting from which angle did they use to get that effect”.....you get the point. We are not fashion/music/movie buff/critiques. We will try to have a few words and/or article accompanying each event, but hopefully we can provide a better description of the event via our pictures. After all, a picture is worth a thousand words, and we’ll have stacks of them (and the fact that I simply cannot come up with a thousand words).
We take images and not photos. I know I’m being a bit pedantic here but the difference is important. We don’t want to be yet another site that rush out to events and simply take dodgy family snapshots of the event (nothing wrong with family snapshots…. I’ve got tons of them). We aim to serve each event and provide an artistic angle to each and every one of them. We haven’t quite worked out exactly how we want to approach this yet. I have pondered on the concept that we give our photographers a key/theme word before each event and see how they can interpret the event within that boundary. I have a few other ideas we’ll be playing with, hopefully they will work out and really provide photos..... um I mean..... images with a difference.
Hopefully, we will manage to achieve some of our lofty goals at covering events and I sincerely hope that all of you (if there are any of you) will enjoy the ride with us.
